NEW YORK CITY -- Ward Churchill, professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado, is scheduled to speak at the New York Society for Ethical Culture, 2 West 64th Street at Central Park West, on Saturday, March 31, from 7:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Civil rights attorney Lynne Stewart is also scheduled to speak. The lecture and discussion, "Parallels: The Coming War Home," will be followed by a reception.
Churchill is a controversial and outspoken social critic and activist who has lectured and written about 9/11, racism, the religious right, and other issues. Hugh Hamilton interviewed him today on his show "Talk Back" on WBAI (99.5 FM) in New York City. Hamilton said that Churchill's situation has raised concerns among many about academic freedom. Churchill told Hamilton that the administration of the University of Colorado has recommended that his tenure be revoked and that he be fired. He said that he has appealed this decision and that the hearing will be held soon. However, the professor said that even if the appeal board sides with him, the administration will be free to ignore its recommendation and fire him anyway. As a result, he suspects that his career at the University of Colorado will soon be over.
Churchill added that his dismissal would not matter very much, since he would continue his activism unabated, but he added that the real point of firing him would not be so much to remove him "personally" but to dissuade other academics from voicing similar social criticism.
For tickets to the March 31 lecture and reception, call (212) 209-2827 or (212) 209-2842. Tickets to the lecture are $20 each; tickets to the reception are $50 each. Proceeds will benefit New York City's Pacifica station, WBAI 99.5 FM.
The Spartacus World Times will be providing full coverage of the lecture and discussion.
